# How to Start a Business With No Money (Honestly)

> To start a business with no money, sell a service you can already deliver with tools you own, and ask for payment or a deposit before you spend anything. Writing, design, tutoring, cleaning, assembly and consulting fit this pattern. Inventory, rented premises and paid advertising are the parts that need capital, so leave them out at first.

Most "no money" business lists are padded. Food trucks need a truck. Online stores need an ad budget. Coffee carts need a permit, a cart and stock on day one. Strip those out and you are left with a much shorter list, and it has one thing in common: the customer pays before you spend.

That is the whole trick. Everything else is detail.

## What "no money" means in practice

Zero is rare, but the real numbers are small. UK residents can trade as sole traders without paying a registration fee, and HMRC lets you earn up to £1,000 a year in trading income before you even need to register, according to its [trading allowance guidance](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tax-free-allowances-on-property-and-trading-income). The IRS expects US self-employment tax once your net earnings reach $400. Berlin charges €15 online or €26 in person for a German trade registration.

The capital you actually need is different: time, a laptop or tools you already own, and a handful of people willing to pay. Your salary from a job you keep for now is the best cushion of all. That is why many people [start a side business while still employed](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/first-steps/side-business-while-employed/) and only quit once invoices cover rent.

## Three filters for ideas that work without capital

Run every idea through these questions. If it fails one, you need money or a long runway.

1. **Does the customer pay before your costs start?** With services you can almost always [ask for a deposit before work begins](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/business-models/ask-clients-for-deposit/). In retail you usually pay for stock first.
2. **Do you already own the tools?** Anything you have to buy is start-up capital in disguise.
3. **Can you run it without stock and without a lease?** A commercial lease commits you for years. Stock ties up cash in goods that may never sell.

Simple enough. It still removes about half of what you find online.

## 14 low-cost business ideas, ranked by speed to first invoice

All of these pass the three filters if you already have the skill. The catch sits next to each one.

| Idea | What you need | The usual catch |
|---|---|---|
| Website and email copywriting | Laptop, samples | AI tools push generic rates down; niche expertise keeps prices up |
| Websites for local businesses | Laptop, a site builder | Clients expect updates after launch; price maintenance separately |
| Tutoring and exam prep | Subject knowledge, video tool | Demand peaks before exams and drops in summer |
| Furniture assembly and handyman jobs | Tools, car | Electrical and gas work need licensed trades in most countries |
| Office and window cleaning | Supplies, liability cover | Physically demanding; price per square metre, not per hour |
| House clearances | Rented van, a helper | Disposal fees eat margins unless quoted upfront |
| Dog walking and pet sitting | Time, references | Some councils and cities license commercial dog walkers |
| Social media for tradespeople | Phone, a plan | Clients churn if leads do not show up within three months |
| Property and restaurant photography | Camera, wide lens | Only zero-capital if you already own the kit |
| Translation and proofreading | Language pair, a specialism | Machine translation squeezes standard jobs |
| Virtual assistance | Laptop, reliability | Bookkeeping may require registration or qualifications, depending on the country |
| Tech help for seniors and small offices | Experience, patience | Data loss liability; back up before every fix |
| In-person workshops | Expertise, a venue on revenue share | Set a minimum headcount or the date costs you money |
| Consulting in your own field | Work history, network | Check your employment contract for non-compete clauses |

What is missing matters as much. No retail with your own stock, no restaurants, no apps. Digital products are not on the list either, because they need little cash but lots of unpaid work before the first sale. If that still appeals, read the guide on [how to sell digital products](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/business-models/sell-digital-products/).

**Three basic models and what they do without capital**

| | Service | Digital product | Retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs start-up money | no | partly | yes |
| First revenue within days | yes | no | partly |
| Customer pays before your costs | yes | yes | no |
| Revenue grows without more hours | no | yes | partly |
| Risk of unsold stock | no | no | yes |

Our own classification. Dropshipping removes unsold stock but not the ad budget.

This is the real trade-off. The model that pays immediately only grows with your hours. The model that grows without your hours pays nothing at first. Many founders start with a service and later package the repetitive part into a product.

## Where the rules bite

Three things cost founders with no money the most, because fixing them later is expensive.

Licensed trades come first. Electrical work, gas and plumbing are regulated almost everywhere. Germany has a whole list of crafts that need a master craftsman qualification before you can register, including tiling since 2020. Assembling a wardrobe is fine. Moving a socket is not.

Then permits. Estate agency, insurance brokering, food handling and childcare all require licences, registrations or inspections that cost money and time. They make poor first businesses if you have no buffer.

Finally, tax registration. The thresholds above are low on purpose. Keep every receipt from the first day, open a separate bank account even if it is a free one, and set aside a share of each invoice for tax. Founders who spend the whole first year's income usually meet the tax bill in year two with nothing left.

## What does not work well without money

Some favourites from the lists deserve a warning.

Dropshipping gets sold as a zero-capital model. You skip the warehouse, but not the advertising, and new stores get almost no traffic without paid ads. The numbers are in the article on [dropshipping startup costs](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/business-models/dropshipping-startup-costs/).

Apps and software platforms are the second trap. The idea is free, building it is not. If you do not code, you can find a technical co-founder for equity, build a rough prototype with no-code tools, or work with a partner that trades engineering for a stake. Venture studios such as [OnlineBuilders](https://onlinebuilders.biz/ventures) review selected projects on that basis, which costs you ownership instead of cash. How those deals work is explained in the guide to [sweat equity](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/funding/sweat-equity-startup/).

Franchises sit in the same corner. Even small systems charge entry fees plus a cut of revenue.

## Your first step: three conversations this week

Before a logo, a website or a registration, find three people who have the problem you want to solve. Do not ask whether they like the idea. Ask what they pay for it today and who does it for them.

If one of the three says "fine, what would you charge?", you have a client. Send a short quote with a price, a scope and a deposit. Register when the work actually starts. You will find more models built around this principle on the [business models](https://ohne-startkapital.de/en/business-models/) page.

## FAQ

### Is it really possible to start with zero money?

Close to zero. Registering as a sole trader in the UK costs nothing, and a German trade registration costs a small fee, 15 euros online in Berlin. What you cannot avoid is your own living costs while the first clients pay.

### What is the fastest business to start with no money?

A service that people around you already pay someone else for. If you can assemble furniture, write product copy or clean offices, you can invoice within days. Products almost always take weeks before the first sale.

### Do I have to register before my first sale?

It depends on the country. In the UK you register for Self Assessment once trading income passes 1,000 pounds a year. In Germany a trade has to be registered when it starts, and in the US self-employment tax applies from 400 dollars of net earnings.

### Should I take a loan to get started faster?

Only if you already know that customers will pay. Borrowing to test an unproven idea turns a cheap experiment into personal debt. Sell first, then borrow to grow something that already works.
